PNHP California Annual Report

Highlights of 2011

BOARD AND STAFF DEVELOPMENT
• The Board approves a new Mission Statement (http://www.pnhpcalifornia.org/about).
• Susie Baldwin, Paul Song, Swathi Bhuma, Chris Brown are new additions to the Board.
• The annual Board and Activist retreat is held in Los Angeles to update the strategic plan.
• Task Forces on Education/Media, Advocacy, Finance and Chapter and Membership Development hold periodic meetings to review and guide implementation of programs. (Task force participation is open to interested members.)
• A new Advisory Board is created and inaugurated with eight founding members.
• Bill Skeen starts 2nd year as PNHP-CA Executive Director.
• Molly Tavella assumes a new position as Education and Outreach Coordinator overseeing the Community Clinic Outreach Program (CCOP) as well as Speakers and Writers Bureau.
• Joey Foy joins PNHP-CA as the 4th Shearer Student Fellow.

FINANCES AND DEVELOPMENT
• An ambitious $283,000 budget was adopted in accord with a strategic plan focused on education, advocacy, and growth.
• PNHP-CA receives a $50,000 grant from The California Endowment to support CaHPSA and educational programs.
• The Spring Fund Appeal raises essential operating funds.
• A $72,000 grant is awarded for 2nd year funding of the CCOP.
• An Event Committee of volunteers and staff organizes a successful benefit concert featuring jazz musician David Benoit at Catalina’s Jazz Club in Los Angeles.
• PNHP-CA receives generous donations in advance of the Fall Fund Appeal.

CHAPTER AND MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
• A process for local chapter formation is developed; new chapters are formed in Chico and the East Bay.
• Quentin Young visits the East Bay Chapter.
• 300 people attend a forum on health care reform organized by members of the Chico Chapter.
• Members participate in Occupy activities around the state.
• Members lead local outreach efforts from San Diego to Humboldt County

CALIFORNIA HEALTH PROFESSIONAL STUDENT ALLIANCE (CaHPSA)
• CaHPSA, PNHP-CA’s affiliated student organization, holds its annual Training Day and Lobby Day at the State Capitol in early January.
• CaHPSA installs new officers and leadership for the 2011-2012 academic year.
• CaHPSA holds Northern and Southern CA Conferences to prepare the 2012 Lobby Day.

COMMUNITY CLINIC OUTREACH PROGRAM
• PNHP-CA’s Community Clinic Outreach Project is launched to educate outpatient primary care providers, community boards, and organized patient groups.
• The CCOP visits leaders of community health centers in Los Angeles and the Bay Area to hold planning discussions, and decides to create a new website with the slogan “Everybody Deserves Healthcare”.

EDUCATION AND MEDIA
• Seeds are planted for a new Business Outreach Project.
• The website (www.pnhpcalifornia.org) is upgraded.
• The Newsletter begins publication on a monthly schedule.
• The Speakers Bureau is re-launched and expanded.
• Nineteen members attend a new speaker training workshop in Berkeley.
• A reinvigorated Writers Bureau stimulates a flurry of successful Letters-to-the-Editor.
• 225 people attend the 2nd annual PNHP-CA sponsored Summer Conference in Los Angeles; Dr. Bob Peck, Don Bechler and Michelle Farmer receive awards.
• Seventeen members attend the PNHP Annual Meeting in Washington, DC where Claudia Chaufan and Paul Song are presenters.

ADVOCACY
• PNHP-CA joins the steering committee to launch the Campaign for a Healthy California (an outgrowth of the State Strategy Group coalition for SB 810).
• PNHP-CA participates in the Technical Advisory Group chaired by former president Jim Kahn to conduct a detailed review of SB 810.
• A teleconference for members features discussion of SB 810 with Sara Rogers, aide to Sen. Mark Leno.
• SB 810 is approved by Senate Health Committee after forceful advocacy by PNHP-CA and other organizations in the Campaign for a Healthy California.
• PNHP-CA meets with staff of the Lieutenant Governor and key members of the Senate Appropriations Committee to pave the way for further progress.
• A teleconference for members features David Himmelstein and Jim Kahn discussing delivery system and payment issues under single payer legislation.
