Newsletter: CaHPSA Chapter Spotlight: April
By Meredith Gibbons, MS1
Although the CaHPSA chapter at WesternU is still a relatively new entity, we had successful events in 2010 and look forward to growing our membership and campus involvement in 2011. In addition to participating in the Southern California Health Care Conference and CaHPSA Lobby Day, the CaHPSA also hosted:
- Fahrenheit 451 Movie Screening as part of the Big Read event with the Pomona Public Library to promote the power of reading. Based on Ray Bradbury’s dystopian novel, the movie/novel encourages empowerment of the individual to be informed and a free-thinking member of society.
- “An Intro to Single Payer Health Insurance”. Guest Lecture Molly Tavella, PHNP 2010 Shearer Fellow, presented key issues and facts to the WesternU community.
- “Mad as Hell Doctors”. WesternU got the amazing opportunity to host the Mad as Hell Doctors on their tour throughout California. Taking this opportunity to have a get up close and personal, these passionate physicians engaged us in a discussion about the health reform bill and single payer reform.
- Campuswide Healthcare Discussion – A lively and informal discussion on national healthcare.
In March 2011 the leadership of the WesternU chapter transitions from Julia Hamilton to Meredith Gibbons for President, and from Amanda Hinrichs to Tatjana Josic for Vice President/Treasurer. Major goals for 2011 include holding a health care discussion on WesternU campus, providing education and advocacy for universal health care, increasing club membership, and hosting more guest lectures.
